Making It Up As I Go Along #521

October

Leaves bruise slender
Skin tendrils off
Green to orange and red
Crumpled under boot

Ask away the staggering
Tongue the glass
Sitting bundled upon the patio
And pronounce summer through

Grass flash frozen green
Ice box night
Films lawns crystal white
Until reclaimed by warmth

FRIDAY…
--- Dayshift.  Not much more to it really other than the new glasses are ready today.  Not a major difference in things but nice for the change.

SATURDAY…
--- More days.  After work I do the UFC with Phil.  Wild Wing is the venue so drinks and wings while men beat each other up on TV.  Fun time.

SUNDAY…
--- Quiet during the day.  Some TV… as much to clear up PVR space for tonight’s programs as to be watching now… the hardships of good HD programing.
--- Nights at work is fairly quiet.

MONDAY…
--- Night again.  More of the same really.

TUESDAY…
--- Groceries… an hour walk… some TV.  Taking it easy first day off.

WEDNESDAY…
--- Ball night.  We win pretty well and I finally remember what the glove is used for.  Still not getting much work in the field.  Seems wherever I play, the ball goes elsewhere.

THURSDAY…
--- Supper and drinks with Janice and Sheila.  I get a call later on telling me I won the 50/50 draw we bought tickets on.
--- Knee is a bit tender today.  I think it got a bit irritated at the game last night and I pushed it harder than I should during my walk today.  Nothing serious though.  Just a little inflamed is my thought… and I wake Friday morning with it feeling pretty normal again.

Making It Up As I Go Along #520

The return of Magnetic Poetry.  Ten years ago, my parents gave me a book with magnetic words you can arrange either within a magnetic page of the book or on a refrigerator.    Since moving to Ottawa, the book has been packed away.  But now, with a mini stand alone freezer in my basement, I’ve put the words up on there and now can go sit Indian Style in front of the freezer and make….

MAGNETIC POETRY!!!

1.
After immense bruising
Slice through glass
Building love
She consumes him

2.
People want summer morning
Tendril’d Tongue Man is here
Wild cracked slender secrets
Put blossoms on dirty dark skin
Evening wind staggers off
To smell the bouquet of a dry red burn

3.
Use up
Shower song
Or
Work away
And
See blue for
A minute

THURSDAY…
--- Awake at 3:10 in the morning and day shift starts off on the wrong foot.
--- Fairly busy day… pretty run down doing it… but make it.
--- Next door is sold.  We’ll see who the new neighbours will be.

FRIDAY…
--- Slept well and that makes a world of difference.  Fairly quiet day at work though.

SATURDAY…
--- Do a walk… get in the nap… work the night.  Pretty quiet Saturday.
--- Drops to about 5 degrees tonight.  Fall is here.

SUNDAY…
--- Wake for good around 11:00.  Lay low around the house.

MONDAY…
--- Home shortly after 6:00… have to stay up for shutter measurements.  He arrives around 7:30 and is gone again just before 8:00.  Bed calls then and I’m there until about twenty to 1:00.
--- Hour walk and BBQ turkey burgers.

TUESDAY…
--- Good sleep.  Has to be mentioned because this is only the second good one in several weeks.  Lots of 4-5 hour nights lately.
--- Rainy day.  Pouring for much of it.  So I’m in the house all day… fiddle with the old laptop, updating things on it.  Some reading… some TV… a mom supper. One of her home made chili’s and one of her home made apple crisps for dessert.

WEDNESDAY…
--- Walk.  Softball night.  We win pretty big tonight.  I still barely touch a ball in the field.  It’s been that way for about a month.  Two balls hit to me most games… no matter if I’m playing 3rd, 2nd, OF… it doesn’t matter.

Making It Up As I Go Along #519

Little explanation ahead of this one.  In light of the storm that hit home this week, a series of poems dealing with the weather extremes I’ve endured.  Each numerical heading is the measurement of each event.  In order… degrees… minus degrees… feet… and km/hr.

Extremes
46
Hot tub heat
While walking the street
A ball game played
Without the shade

Thirst never quenched
Cicada bugs
Act as heat’s soundtrack

-42
Barren parking lot
Gloves and hat forgot
Howling wind of fears
Pain attacks the ears

Hands scurrying back and forth
Coat pocket heat
Transferred o’er freezing ears

21
First floor windows encased in white
Avalanche buried and out of sight
Bi-daily blizzards arrive
Unsure you’ll survive

Streets now lanes
Sidewalks now hills
Summer a foreign dream

148
Quite a wintery scene
Less a howl and more a scream
Leaning all your weight
Unsure of old tree’s fate

Window panes rattle
Upstairs loft shivers
As the woodstove keeps you safe.

WEDNESDAY…
--- Long day.  Work days… then stuck in traffic for 90 minutes to get home.  A sink hole at the off ramp of the highway to Orleans has a car sitting in the sewer under the road and the main route into Orleans cut.
--- I get home just in time to change, grab some food, and out the door again for ball.
--- A late meal and some drinks after the game means a lack of sleep for tomorrow’s dayshift.

THURSDAY…
--- Tired at work.  Drive home is better… but I take a long route to avoid traffic and still take a little more than a half hour.  Though when I get home, it seems traffic wasn’t so bad today anyway.  May have been people cutting out earlier today than yesterday.

FRIDAY…
--- Walk in the morning.  50 minutes out there.  Funny, I’m starting to look forward to the Fall and Winter so that I can walk without mosquitos buzzing around my head.
--- Nap and then off to night shift alone.  Hmm… as I typed I left off the “f” in shift… would have meant a completely different type of sentence had I not caught it.

SATURDAY…
--- Rainy times.  Been much thunder and lightning off and on ever since yesterday evening.  Kind of fun.
--- With the rain… it’s up around 11:00… a little TV… back to bed at 2:00… up at 4:00… work shift again this evening.

SUNDAY…
--- Up around 11:00.  Lazy for a while… watch a ball game on TV… go for a walk.  The few days of rain have really made a difference to the creek and pond out front.  Pond is as full as I’ve seen and the creek is running into it as a babbling torrent.  Well, it’s babbling anyway.

MONDAY…
--- Groceries.  Both a stop at the little market on the side of Navan Road (berries, grapes, apples) and Sobeys.
--- Walk after that and some time around the house.  Heard from my neighbour today that the extension of Trailsedge to the right of my place may be on hold now and it would stay as forest there as well as the area across the street from me.  That would be nice.

TUESDAY…
--- Checking out blinds/shades today.  Got the living room window, ensuite bathroom, front window, and patio door all to do.  Ball’s in motion.
--- Ottawa is becoming a horrible city to drive in.  Just going across town today for the window coverings place, it takes me about 40 minutes to do a 20 minute drive at 11:15 on a Tuesday morning?!?! Not like I’m going in rush hour or anything.  Construction is everywhere and lanes of road are closed more often than not it seems.  Plus this city is horrible for the types of drivers in it.  Everyone seems to fall into one of two categories.  (1) drive 20 below the speed limit in a drift-along fashion.  (2) drive 40 above the limit with the attitude that tailgating is an acceptable means of getting around.
--- Got the call while on my walk… the rocking chair is ready to be picked up.  I’ll get it tomorrow… yeee… I’m becoming an old man.
--- BBQ this evening.  Summer not quite gone yet.

Making It Up As I Go Along #518

Fall
Fall quietly drifts.
Subtle hints whisper

Night shifts end darkly
Horizon orange climbing
As bedroom blind drops

Summer’s drought ended
Showers of rain
Thirstily gulped by earth

Windy days drop leaves
Turning untethered red
Dryly skipping over stones

Cricketed still evenings
Crisp star skies
The humidity of day gone

Summer quietly drifts
Gently stroking shoulders
As it meanders to the horizon.

TUESDAY…
--- Mom and dad here and we’re off.  Van Gogh exhibit at the art gallery.  Some time downtown for lunch prior to that.  Groceries and BBQ for supper.

WEDNESDAY…
--- MEC for some shopping.  Lunch at Paddy’s Pub… run in to Karl there… To the mall for some more shopping, but not before going to the wood working store just down from Paddy’s.  I get a small table for the front porch and a rocking chair for the living room.
--- Ball this evening.  Mom and dad there to watch as we win with me pitching.  Not as impressive as pitching fastball… but a fun evening all the same.
--- Chinese food after the game.

THURSDAY…
--- Mom and dad’s last day in town.  Mom does all sorts of cooking for me.  We make a run around looking for a freezer for me to put in the basement.  Find one at Walmart but it’s not in right now and I have to wait.
--- Out to Moxies for supper.  A nice night out.

FRIDAY…
--- Drop mom and dad at the airport around 11:00.  A good visit with them.
--- Work the night shift.  Pretty quiet night at work.

SATURDAY…
--- Up around 10:30 or so… Tired day.  Do a walk and pretty well lay low the rest of the day.

SUNDAY…
--- Get the freezer today.  Now I’ll be able to spread around mom’s goodies rather than jam up my kitchen freezer.
--- A walk and some TV as well today.

MONDAY…
--- Walk… and laundry… some TV.
